The thermal use of groundwater by heat pumps and by the infiltration of cooling water can cause regional changes of the groundwater temperature. A mathematical modelling of the regional long-term heat transport allows a quantification of the temperature changes, with the example of Altach in the Rhine Valley. The simulation results are compared with long-term temperature measurements. The calculated temperature differences can form a basis for the assesment of the permissible thermal use of groundwater.
