OPTIMIZATION OF WATER MANAGEMENT IN THE RUT IRRIGATION DISTRICT, COLOMBIA

A water balance at field level using the WASIM model (Hess et al, 2000) was used to determine irrigation requirements, yield reductions and drain flow based on a 20-year simulation. Hydrodynamic simulations (DUFLOW model, IHE 1998) for the main drain using the drain flow from the water balance and 1-, 2-, 3-day rainfall with a return period of 5 years provided information on the required pumping capacity for drainage and the extent of the areas inundated.
