EVALUATION OF F-RNA COLIPHAGES AS INDICATORS OF VIRUSES AND THE SOURCE OF FAECAL POLLUTION
F-specific RNA phages are becoming the indicator of choice for viruses in water and have been accepted as one of the rapid screening tests to determine the quality of water. Studies have shown that based on hybridisation tests, F-RNA coliphages could be associated with either a human or animal source. The purpose of this study was to set up the ISO method for F-RNA coliphage results obtained for samples taken from different sample sites having different characteristics. Further to this study was to genotype the F-RNA coliphages and establish the source of pollution to be of either animal or human origin.
