STUDY OF ESTROGENIC EFFECTS ON CARP ("CYPRINUS CARPIO") EXPOSED TO SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT EFFLUENTS
Study, through 8 weeks exposure tests, of the feminisation of male carp by estrogen-like substances in effluent from sewage treatment plants in Japan, performed by measuring their serum vitellogenin (VTG) , a biomarker of feminisation in liver tissues. The VTG concentrations in male carp exposed to the effluent increased with time and decreased after stopping the exposure. In the control experiment using dechlorinated tap water, VTG was nevertheless not detected in any male carp.
