RETHINKING URBAN WATER SYSTEMS - REVISITING CONCEPTS IN URBAN WASTEWATER COLLECTION AND TREATMENT TO ENSURE INFRASTRUCTURE SUSTAINABILITY
The development of integrated wastewater treatment and localised water reuse with biogas and biosolids recovery might be a valid solution to avoid the extension of expensive wastewater treatment plants in fast-growing and densely populated urban centres, like in Asia-Pacific region. Time discharge of sewers, vacuum sewers and biotreatment (vermiculture, faecal coliform removal) can also contribute to extend the life of wastewater infrastructures in megacities.
