REDUCING THE SIZE OF A NITROGEN REMOVAL ACTIVATED SLUDGE PLANT BY SHORTENING THE RETENTION TIME OF INERT SOLIDS VIA SLUDGE STORAGE
Spare nitrification capacity is needed for a nitrifying activated sludge to counter shock loads of toxicity incidents. The technic consists in keeping a longer sludge retention time in over designed plants and to reintroduce the sludge in case of incident. Importance of the inert solids. Savings on tank volume is around 20%. Confirmation of the theoritical results on a pilot plant.
