NITRATE IN AQUIFERS BENEATH AGRICULTURAL SYSTEMS
Study of groundwater vulnerability to nitrogen and nitrate used in fertilisers in agriculture in the United States. Shallow unconfined aquifers are most susceptible to nitrate contamination; carbonate aquifers provide a substantial but smaller contamination risk. The growing of corn, soybeans and hogs produce significantly larger concentrations of groundwater nitrate than all other agricultural systems. Situation in other countries of the world.
