BUILDING CAPACITY OF THE BALTIC STATES TO MEET THE EU WATER FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE THROUGH WATERSHED DEMONSTRATION PROJECTS

Given the similarity of the environmental issues with the Great Lakes and the Baltic Sea, a program of mutual cooperation was developed to meet the EU framework Directive. This program provides for mutual improvement of the water quality by sharing information, expertise and management approaches. Project selection criteria, watersheds selected and project descriptions are presented. Major accomplishments, problems encountered and future directions are also discussed.
